My Week at Maerilly's House
- I had to get used to reconfiguring my sleeping schedule. The first night, I had trouble sleeping but it sort of got better.
- I experimented with Wireless Internet on Xavier (my laptop) and the networks you can choose from have interesting names. Maerilly and I started referring to them by their names. It sounds like we're actually talking about someone human. There was Carlo and Tad Inc. There were also some that clearly let you know about their disposition towards George Bush - and they weren't very nice.
- The Flightpath Coffee House a couple of houses down the street has great coffee. I love the Carrelton.
- The neighbouring Arabian Bazaar has pretty interesting things, all from Syria, Morocco, and Egypt. There was a cup for $64 because it had 24 karat gold. They also sold belly dancing costumes and kohl for eyes as well as other things. Oh yes, the place also hosted belly dancing lessons from $10 to $14 each class. hehe. Maerilly and I want to go.
- Meanwhile, I also had a go with Filipino food. It's actually pretty good and I, amazingly, ate more rice than I have in the past year. (I'm one of those rare Asians that don't like rice much.) I just flood the rice with the extra stuff so I don't taste it. I also ate more fruit than I usually do while there. I had a banana, tried guava, and I ruined my record of NOT eating a fresh apple for the past 4 years or so. It was only a slice - but still!
- Maerilly and I also tried out the public transportation. At one point, we wanted to explore on the bus so we took the bus that goes to her place. We knew it went into another route BUT we didn't know that we wouldn't be informed. Needless to say, we were stuck on that bus for 2 hours before it eventually came back to her neighborhood. Wow. lol...
- My personal alarm clock while I stayed there was Choco, Maerilly's dog. He had taken a liking to licking my face and stepping over (and ON) me. That alarm clock was rather effective.
My Dorm
- The place is almost symmetrical. I mean, it's like mirrored. The only difference is the sink, cabinet, my drawers, and the door that's off to the side. It's also wood and the window's framed with something that reminds me of jail.
- I refer to my resident hall as The Prison. Especially since the neighboring resident hall is newer, and therefore prettier.
- It didn't smell like feet but it still didn't smell fresh. Now it smells better with my Lemony Fresh Lysol that I use to clean the place. :)
- The laundry room and the Bathroom is locked so whenever you go there, you have to bring your keys as well. It sucks and is inconvenient but according to my RA (Resident Advisor), it is because one year, some guy was found watching in the girls' showers. I still think it's inconvenient though.
- I finally met my roommate, Amy - and her boyfriend, Bob, for that matter. Everything's going good.
- I finally finished organising my half of the room yesterday night. I was excited.
- Laundry isn't that hard to do which is a good thing considering the fact that I need more clothes and that means I need to wash them more often in order to have enough clothes. haha... Yeah. That also means that I need more quarters. It's 75 cents each so it's $1.50 each time. I haven't tried using my card yet.
- The refrigerator is lacking in space. The microwave is all right though.
- I'm getting used to community showers. So far, I have had no trouble with... B.M. :) Showering is great. The shower water-spitters (forgot what they're called) vary. The two that I've used are completely different. One's light and sprinkles the water while the other pours the water. Seriously, though!
- The desk needs to be bigger. I have a printer on it and after that, I only have enough room for Xavier and my desk lamp. There are spaces on the side - but still! haha...It's like I have his little cubicle. Wall to my right, bed to my left, fridge to my back, and desk to my front.
- I need more things to stick on the wall. It's barren except for my schedule, a calender, and a flyer of a sort for some off Asian organisational social thing. -sigh- I do have 4 stuffed animals (two of them snowballs) and a half-finished cross stitch of a duck with an umbrella.
- My room is bereft of anything UT spirit. There's absolutely no burnt orange colour except for the bags from the Coop store that we get our school books from. The only other orange is the Listerine and Neutragena face wash.
School
- My schedule is as follows:
- MONDAY: Cell and Molecular Biology, Cultural Anthropology, Calculus, and Cell and Molecular Biology Lab. My first class is at 11 am and my last class ends at 4 pm.
- TUESDAY: C & M Biology Lab, Chemistry, and Calculus. My first class is at 9 am and my day ends at 6 pm.
- WEDNESDAY: FIG (Freshman Interest Group) Seminar, C & M Biology, Anthropology, Calculus, and C & M Biology Discussion Section. Day starts at 10 am and ends at 4 pm.
- THURSDAY: Chemistry and Calculus. The day starts at 2 pm and ends at 6 pm.
- FRIDAY: Anthropology, C & M Biology, and Calculus. The day starts at 9 am and ends at 3 pm.
- There are booths around campus and I keep on getting stopped by Christian representatives. AWKWARD.
- The classes look really far away (and apart) on the map but when you actually walk, it's not that bad. Well, it is in the sun. I feel like a popsicle left out under the sky in... I don't know, the Sahara Desert.
- I search my classes with my map. I'm starting to get used to not to use the map. I got back to my dorm today without one and I went to chem without one!
- My teachers are all funny. They all have their quirks and make subtle jokes that are quite entertaining. (I saw the lighting of the UT Pickles today in chem class. Yes, I did say pickles.) Even my calc teacher was enjoyable.
- I have a total of 3 books for anthro, 3 books for calc (two are study guides), 2 for bio, and 2 for chem. Fortunately, we don't bring them to class. Only bring a spiral to take notes. No wait, I need to bring my course guide for bio. But it's about a centimeter thick so it's not bad. My books totaled at about $500. Possibly a little more.
- I was late to my first day of math class. I walked to the class, there was no light in the window, found another guy who was looking for it. Went to a nearby office. Came back to try to open the door and we found out we had to walk in because it was around the corner. It was rather embarrassing.
- I wish winter was here.
Austin
- The place is awesome. I get my exercise and I see interesting things. Even the hobos are. One of my friends told me that when offered a sandwich, they declined. The other day, I passed a hobo on the sidewalk singing a really funny song while strumming his guitar. I forgot what it was but I was in a bad mood due to the sun but it managed to make me smile.
- My favorite place to eat is at Veggie Heaven. They also have great tapioca drinks. :) Mmmm...
- I'm getting used to walking around and crossing multiple streets. The buses are no biggie... though I've never tried the UT buses yet.
- I just got a CVS card to save more money!
