Ryusei no Kizuna

For the Chinese New Years weekend, I decided to start and finish
Ryusei no Kizuna (流星の絆), a Japanese drama of the suspense and comedy genres. It stars Ninomiya Kazunari, Erika Toda, Nishikido Ryo, Kaname Jun, and Nakashima Mika. The summary is as follows:
Based on the popular novel of the same name, Ryusei no Kizuna tells the story of three orphans, whose parents were murdered long ago. Together, the three vowed on a shooting star to one day avenge their parents. After many years, the two brothers have found the murderers, and are set to carry out their plan for vengeance when they realize they've made a serious miscalculation; you see, their sister...
I honestly had to say that I didn't really know what to expect - mostly because of the three periods that follow "sister" in the summary. I did give it a try - I mean, I was familiar with the cast and the things that the summary did reveal perked my interest. The interesting thing was how a drama with such a dark background such as murder and the theme of revenge is interspersed with comedy. To me, I actually liked it a lot since, well, my sense of humor isn't very normal and I find many things funny. To others, it may be a bit odd, but it's not like the jokes are banter is made everywhere - the serious parts meant to be serious and the parts meant to be a little light are pretty entertaining. It did give me some good laughs. One thing though - Mika Nakashima's role is rather eccentric, odd, and out-of-nowhere, but it's sort of like a breath of fresh air since it's totally different from everyone else's character within the drama, so I sort of don't agree with some other reviews that mentioned something about her character being pointless or something.

Even though the drama was a short 10 episodes, I liked it a lot. The way things were progressing and all until everything unravels rather surprisingly at the end. I do recommend this drama (and yes, I do realise that I usually do say that for all the dramas I have watched - either that or to 'give it a go').

Hua Pi (Mainland China)

The day before I came back to Austin, I watched Hua Pi (Painted Skin/Simplified Chinese:
画皮) [imdb; Variety Movie Review; wiki], a Chinese movie with Mainland China actors and actresses and with a Hong Kong tech-crew (Variety). It stars Donnie Yen, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Vicki Zhao, Sun Li, Qi Yu Wu, and Jiu Song. This movie's actually set back in a Dynastic China and has supernatural/fantasy themes - some might even say it touches upon 'horror' - at least that's what I heard before I watched it. Here's the summary (taken from wiki):

Though the story is based mainly on a supernatural premise, it is more of a love story rather than a ghost/horror film. It is based on Pu Songling's classic novel, Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Zhou Xun starrs Xiao Wei, a fox spirit (huli jing) that feasts on human hearts in order to maintain her lovely, youthful appearance. When General Wang Sheng (Chen Kun) 'rescues' her from a band of bandits and brings her home, trouble brews as the demon falls in love with the general, who is married to Pei Rong (Zhao Wei).

Another (older) love triangle is present, between the general's brother Pang Yong (Donnie Yen), the general, and his wife. Pei Rong asks Pang Yong for help as she suspects Xiao Wei for what she really is. Pang Yong is aided by an inexperienced 'demon buster', Xia Bing (Betty Sun). Hints of a developing relationship between Xia Bing and Pang Yong are there, although this is never really explored. Another subplot revolves around Xiao Wei's lizard demon ally (Qi Yuwu) who has unreciprocated feelings for her and helps her get all the human hearts she needs.

Even though it started off with a battle, it was a little slow-going, but it set up what would happen later on. It was only through the middle of the movie did I get hooked into it. It wasn't the greatest, but I certainly don't think it a waste of my time. There is an underlying romantic theme in it (or two) and the special effects pass. I mean, it did do well in the Chinese box office (I remember seeing posters promoting the movie) and it's not bad at all. I guess it's also because I watched the version I bought from China and it has simplifed Chinese characters. Also, the audio wasn't that good at times so I had to rely on what I knew of Chinese to figure it out - but that may be because I bought the DVD at one of those places. :) Anyway, before you decide to skip this movie, just give it a go.

Cyborg Girl

So, in order to try to forget I'll be moving to Austin tomorrow (and back to school), I decided to squeeze in a movie:
Cyborg Girl/Cyborg She (我的女友是机器人), a Japanese comedy (with a little bit of a romantic story woven into it). It stars Haruka Ayase and Keisuke Koide. The summary (taken from MySoju) is as follows:
One day, a beautiful cyborg girl appears in front of a dull university student. Even though the cyborg starts to like him, she can’t truly feel emotions, so the boy has no choice but to say goodbye to her inhuman power and ‘violence’. Missing her, he continues his lonely existence. Some time thereafter, a disastrous earthquake hits Tokyo, and the cyborg girl saves his life. In that moment, she starts to have feelings like a real human being.
This was one of the Top 10 Movies of the Week on MySoju so I decided to try it out. And since I thought the summary has potential. So... I tried it out and it was cute, sweet, and funny. Well, and a bit sad at one point - but it was short-lived. :) OK, so I know it had to be funny, considering that the genre it was categorized under was "comedy", but it seriously did make me laugh (and go "I cannot believe that just happened"). The sad part was to be expected, because, well, every movie has it's ups and downs. I have to say that it's a pretty good movie, especially on those nice quiet nights that just scream for entertainment - this may be the movie for you!

Bloody Monday

I just finished Bloody Monday (ブラッディ・マンデイ ), a Japanese drama of the suspense and action genres encircling the topic of terrorism (especially bio-terrorism) and hacking (obviously). It stars Miura Haruma, Kawashima Umika, Sato Takeru, Fujii Mina, and Tokunaga Eri. The summary is as follows:

After a biological terrorist attack kills off the population of a Russian town; Japan's Public Safety Special Third unit, code name THIRD-i, believes that the terrorist organization responsible plans to unleash the same virus known as Bloody X into Tokyo. Subsequently, THIRD-i recruits the help of genius hacker Takagi Fujimaru to find out what happened in the Russia. However, as Fujimaru becomes involved, he soon finds out that he is in over his head and that the terrorist groups influence reaches not only his school but even the police. Fujimaru must now rely on his skill as a hacker to unravel the organizations sinister plot and find out the truth behind "Bloody Monday."
I have to say that it was pretty suspenseful and it kept me with it the entire way (I finished 10 episodes yesterday and the first thing I did this morning was to watch the last episode -- yes, there is a total of 11 episodes). Like many other action/suspense dramas, new things unfold as it progresses and it keeps you guessing, because the most obvious thing usually turned out to be wrong. This drama has no romance in it (which is a nice change, for once) but it deals with the notion of family and friends.

Even though it's Haruma's first leading role, he did it well and perhaps, we'll be seeing more of him! The last episode didn't really tie everything up with a neat bow, though. In fact, it leaves some room for a sequel of some sort, but it concludes well enough.

You can watch it here.

MARS

I finally watched
MARS (戰神) and I finished it last night. :) It's a Taiwanese drama based on a Japanese manga of the same name consisting of 21 episodes that touches upon several 'sensitive topics' - but it's not all that graphic (it just gives you enough), then again I like graphic things. It stars Barbie Hsu, Vic Zhou, Megan Lai, Xiu Jie Kai, and An Jun Can. The summary is as follows:
A shy artistic girl, Qi Luo (Barbie Xu), is approached by a the care-free and play-boy Chen Ling (Vic Zhou), who asked Qi Luo for directions to a hospital. In a split-second Ling forgets what the hospital name was. Hurriedly Qi Luo draws a map for him, unknowing that she was drawing on the back of one her drawings. Ling thanked her but she ran off before she could hear him, he then noticed the picture and was touched. The next time they had seen each other, Ling told her about the picture but Qi Luo ignored him and said he could keep the picture. Ling was very touched by the picture and that drew him closer and closer towards Qi Luo. But his past comes back to haunt him when a new student arrives as well as Qi Luo's past comes back. Feelings will collide when you have a jealous ex come to stand up and fight for Ling against Qi Luo and an known admirer confesses his feelings to Qi Luo.
I have to say that the series was pretty good - the acting, the topics - all of it. Of course there's one item that I thought would only happen in dramas (spoiler alert here): there would of course be a girl who was soooo in love with Chen Ling and do several horrible things to deter Qi Luo from him (like smashing her hand with a rock) but then they almost immediately become best friends. (end spoiler alert) O_o Anywho... the following topics are mentioned and portrayed in this drama: sexual harrassment, murder, suicide, and a setting that reappears includes a psychiatric hospital.

There are some moments that could be categorized as under "scary" but it's only a handful of times due to some psychological problems addressed, the rest is rather sweet and cute and the ending is sort of fitting. It also touches upon the topic of love (unsurprisingly): loving too much, loving too little, needing love... All I can say is that I loved this. It sort of made me think, like with Death Note, and I like that. And again, like Death Note, I ended up deciding both sides had a point. -shakes head- This is why I can never choose, haha...

2 Faces of my Girlfriend

2 Faces of my Girlfriend (두얼굴의 여친) is a Korean movie of the 'romantic comedy' genre (with a bit of melodrama thrown in) released in 2007, starring Bong Tae-Gyu and Jeong Ryeo-Won. The summary (taken from here) is as follows:

Gu-chang (Bong Tae-gyu) is 30 years old, still in college, unemployed and leeches of his family. Worst yet, Gu-chang has never had a girlfriend or even kissed a girl before. His friends are aware of his situation and usually has Gu-chang appearing as the butt end of their jokes.

One day, Gu-chang falls asleep on a subway, after a night of drinking. When he wakes up, he sees a girl (Jeong Ryeo-won) that he mistakes for a ghost. The girl isn’t a ghost, but works as an extra in a horror film. She’s on her way home, after becoming ill on the set of the film. Gu-chang doesn’t know this and immediately runs away from her. He drops his cellphone, which the girl picks up.

They eventually do meet again, but in a more typical circumstance and seem to get along well. Even more remarkable for Gu-chang, is that the girl seems to take an interest in him. She introduces herself as “Anni” and thus, Gu-chang and Anni’s budding romantic relationship begins. Unfortunately, when the couple spends an evening drinking, “Anni” suddenly takes a whole new personality, a rough talking brute like person that likes to fight. Gu-chang slowly comes to the realization that Anni suffers from multiple personalities.
I actually watched it because it was one of the top movies listed at MySoju so I decided to give it a try. It focuses on love blossoming between a guy who has no experience and a girl who has MPD and all the troubles (and laughter) that comes with it. I actually enjoyed it a bit and it made me laugh and I admit it squeezed a tear or two out of me at one point. All in all, I enjoyed it and I recommend it.

You can watch it here.

Hana Yori Dango ~Final

Hana Yori Dango Final
is the movie sequel to the first two seasons - except this is a movie. The old cast from the drama series all star in it (
Inoue Mao, Matsumoto Jun, Oguri Shun, Matsuda Shota, Abe Tsuyoshi) so no worries. :) The slightly shortened summary (taken from MySoju) is as follows:

The movie begins as Domyoji holds an extravagant press conference to announce his wedding to Makino the following spring. The press is playing her up like a modern-day Cinderella and everything seems to be going well. Later, the families offer congratulations to the couple. Even Domyoji’s mother—who was formerly vehemently opposed to the relationship and tried desperately to break them up at every opportunity—is suddenly happy for them. She even offers Makino a family heirloom: a tiara worth 10 billion yen (about $95 million USD) called “Smile of Venus”. Later, a man dressed in black crashes into their room through a window and steals the “Smile of Venus” tiara. Domyoji tries to chase the man but he vanishes into the city. By the time they get back to the hotel room the glass is completely cleaned up and the window is replaced as if nothing had ever happened...

I actually liked the movie (even though it took me this long to get to it). It's pretty interesting and touches upon the power of faith and love while traveling around the world like to Las Vegas and Hong Kong. It was personally appealed to me because it's been so long since I was last in Las Vegas and it looks much different than what I remember - and I've always wanted to visit Hong Kong. Anyway... it's nice and cool and though it's sort of odd to have his mother all for the wedding - it all makes sense in the end.

The ending is also pretty sweet. :)

雨像眼淚 暗自洶湧
Yu xiang yan kei an zi xiong yong
The rain is like tears, secretly raging
卻不敢放肆揮霍 這點痛
Que bug an fang si hui huo zhe dian tong
But it doesn’t dare to presumptuously tease this pain
雨是眼淚 很怕天空
Yu shi yan lei hen pa tian kong
The rain is tears, afraid of the sky
一無所有
Yi wu suo you
Empty-handed

雨像眼淚 暗自洶湧
Yu xiang yan lei an zi xiong yong
The rain’s like tears, secretly raging
我知道天空只剩這點痛
Wo zhi dao tian kong zhi sheng zhe dian tong
I know that the sky is only a remnant of this pain
雨是眼淚 偷偷墜落
Yu shi yan lei tou tou zhui luo
Rain is tears, secretly falling
傘下的你 剛好經過
San xia de ni gang hao jing guo
The you under the umbrella just finished passing through
